ECGI Research Members Awarded 2016 Nobel Economics Prize
ECGI Research Members Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström have been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences “for their contributions to contract theory”. They were elected Fellows of the ECGI in 2002. "Contract theory identifies a variety of obstacles to cooperation and suggests which contracts are best suited to overcome them. The theory is both positive and normative: it offers coherent explanations for the contracts that are commonly written, as well as a method for f´nding appropriate contractual solutions to new problems. It generates precise hypotheses that can be confronted with empirical data and lays an intellectual foundation for the design of various policies and institutions, from bankruptcy legislation to political constitutions" (Scientic Background on the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2016). Jörgen Holmquist
It is with the deepest regret and sadness that we report the untimely death of our Chairman, Jörgen Holmquist, last Friday whilst skiing in the United States. Jörgen succeeded Eddy Wymeersch as Chairman of the ECGI in June 2012. In the last 18 months, he presided over our Board with wisdom and insight during a period when the Institute enhanced its reputation as a world-class academic institution. Under his leadership, the ECGI realised some notable milestones, including the formation of the European Corporate Governance Research Foundation, the inauguration of the Global Corporate Governance Colloquia and the development of a constructive dialogue between the European Union and Asia. All his friends and colleagues at the ECGI will miss his charm and his deft diplomatic guidance of our Institute.
